RULING
The Supreme Court affirmed the conviction of Jovencio Luansing for the crime of rape. The Supreme Court found that the victim's testimony was clear, consistent, and credible. She positively identified Luansing as the perpetrator and provided a detailed account of the rape incident. The Court held that the victim's account was given in a straightforward manner, without any material inconsistencies or contradictions. Moreover, the Court noted that the victim immediately reported the incident to her parents, who then brought her to the police station to file a complaint. Medical evidence was also presented, which confirmed that the victim had indeed suffered from physical injuries consistent with sexual assault.
The
Court reiterated that in rape cases, the sole testimony of the victim, if
credible, is sufficient to sustain a conviction. In this case, the victim's
testimony was found to be credible and consistent, leading the Court to
conclude that Luansing's guilt had been established beyond reasonable doubt.
